Joseph Ignaz Anton von Saenger (born December 5, 1805 in Pultusk ; † February 11, 1875 in Wiesbaden ) was royal Prussian major general and most recently the commandant of the Erfurt fortress .

origin

His parents were the Polish captain and Prussian chief forester Alexander Simon von Saenger and his wife Alexandra von Bronewski .

Life

He visited the orphanage in Halle and then went to the local high school. After graduating, he joined the 5th Artillery Brigade as a gunner on September 28, 1824. On May 1, 1825, he was appointed Bombardier , on April 26, 1826, NCO and on June 21, 1826, Portepeefähnrich. From October 1, 1826 to July 31, 1828 he was posted to the United Artillery and Engineering School . He was then appointed on September 9, 1828 as an extra-budgetary second lieutenant and on December 20, 1830 as an artillery officer. On March 17, 1842, he was promoted to Premier-Lieutenant and on April 13, 1844, he received his confirmation of nobility as von Saenger . He was promoted to captain on December 26, 1848 and came to Magdeburg as an artillery officer on April 2, 1857 . From there he came to the 7th Artillery Regiment on February 2, 1858 as commander of the cavalry division. He was promoted to lieutenant colonel on October 18, 1861 and fought as such in the German-Danish War . He fought near Missunde , took part in the assault on the Düppeler Schanzen and in the campaign in Jutland . For this he received the Order of the Red Eagle, 4th class with swords, on March 10, 1864 . On May 26, 1864 he came to the field artillery regiment No. 2 as commander of the 2nd division and was assigned to the staff of General Eduard Vogel von Falckenstein . He was released from his post on December 18, 1864. Two days later - on December 20, 1864 - he came to the Erfurt Fortress as commandant , and was assigned à la suite to Field Artillery Regiment No. 2. On April 11, 1865, he received the Düppeler Sturmkreuz and on June 18, 1865, he was promoted to colonel.

On March 2, 1867 , he was put up for retirement , he was also awarded the 3rd Class Crown Order and, on November 14, 1867, he was also given permission to wear the uniform of Field Artillery Regiment No. 7. During the Franco-German War he was the military member of the Reserve Hospital Commission in Wiesbaden. On February 22nd, 1871 he got the character of major general and died on February 11th, 1875 in Wiesbaden.

Saenger married Fanny Anna Paulet (* 1815; † April 26, 1888) on December 28, 1836 . The couple had a daughter.
