Joseph M. Newman

Joseph M. Newman (born August 7, 1909 in Logan , Utah , † January 23, 2006 in Simi Valley , California ) was an American director .

Life

Newman started his career at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer at the age of 16 from scratch and worked his way up through various positions to assistant director . His first feature film was Clear All Wires! from 1933, in which he assisted George W. Hill . He was nominated twice for Best Assistant Director for an Oscar , in 1936 for David Copperfield and the following year for San Francisco . Between 1938 and 1949 he first directed short films under the name Joe Newman . In 1949 he made the film noir Abandoned with Raymond Burr and Jeff Chandler . In 1952 he directed the adventure film Die Feuerspringer von Montana with Richard Widmark , Jeffrey Hunter and Richard Boone and a few years later the B-movie - science fiction film Metaluna IV does not answer . In 1959, the circus film Die Welt der Sensationen with Victor Mature , Red Buttons and Peter Lorre was made , which was nominated for the Laurel Award .

In 1961 he made his last feature film, after which he worked as a television director and directed episodes of the television series Alfred Hitchcock Presents and Twilight Zone . In 1965 he retired from show business. In 2004 and 2005 he was interviewed for films about Cecil B. DeMille and Greta Garbo .
