Joseph Montgomery

Joseph Montgomery (born September 23, 1733 in Paxtang , Dauphin County , Province of Pennsylvania , †  October 14, 1794 in Harrisburg , Pennsylvania ) was an American politician . Between 1780 and 1782 he was a delegate for Pennsylvania in the Continental Congress .

Career

Joseph Montgomery received a classical education. In 1755 he graduated from Princeton College . He then studied theology. In 1761 he was ordained a minister. Between 1761 and 1777 he was active as such in New Jersey , Delaware and Pennsylvania. In 1777 he became a chaplain to a Maryland unit during the Revolutionary War . He held this post until 1780. Between 1780 and 1782 he was a member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives and the Continental Congress. From 1785 to 1794 he was a notary ( Recorder of Deeds and Register of Wills ) in Dauphin County. From 1786 he was an appellate judge on the Court of Common Pleas . Joseph Montgomery died in Harrisburg on October 14, 1794.
