Johann Heinrich Joseph Niesert (born November 27, 1766 in Münster , † June 14, 1841 in Velen ) was a German Catholic clergyman, manuscript and seal collector, historian and numismatist. After Nikolaus Kindlinger, he is a co-founder of Westphalian historical research.

Life

He was born as the eldest child of coppersmith Bernhard Joseph Niesert and, after passing his exams with distinction, ordained a Catholic priest on September 20, 1790 . In 1791 he took up a position as a chaplain in Drensteinfurt . On January 19, 1796, he accepted the position of court master and educator with Baron Paul Joseph von Landsberg-Velen on Velen. After great personal difficulties with his employer, he prevailed when it came to filling the pastor's position in Velen in 1804.

At that time, Niesert was described by his former chaplain Weidlich as domineering and opinionated, who was constantly having "trouble and turmoil" with his congregation, but who had no personal contact. Very soon there was a falling out between the congregation and the new pastor: Without the congregation's consent, Niesert would have broken the old church bells and ordered new ones. The largest of the new bells was inscribed: ... when Joseph Niesert was pastor in Velen . He raised the cost of 2200 thalers by selling the church forest to a timber merchant. There was a legal dispute between pastor and parish, which could only be settled after years.

According to Kaplan Weidlich, Niesert closed himself in front of his congregation with his “kitchen dragon”. This left him time for his real passion: collecting books, documents, manuscripts and other antiquities. He processed the collected material scientifically and made it available to the public. In addition to his position as pastor and court master in Velen, his income was secured as a beneficiary of the abolished cathedral monastery Paderborn and vicar of St. Aegidius in Münster. He was a member of the society Pro excolendo jure patrio zu Groningen and was particularly active in the Society for the History and Archeology of Westphalia . He also showed interest in archaeological questions.

estate

On May 20, 1841, Joseph Niesert drew up his will. In it he bequeathed all of the documents he copied about the rule of Gemen and Raesfeld to Count Landsberg. A complete and instructive catalog of his literary art estate was to be printed and the estate to be auctioned. According to the catalog, Joseph Niesert left behind: 16,366 volumes of books; 322 manuscripts; 600 documents and bundles of documents; 8,432 coins, many of them in gold and silver, including 43 silver coins from the time of Emperor Antoninus Pius (138–161), 400 woodcuts; 800 copperplate engravings; 32 Roman and Germanic sanctuaries, 450 seals, 1261 cast seals; 450 casts of the learned seal; 500 unsorted sealed casts; 5,000 coats of arms; 2,300 casts of ancient gems; two cabinets with a collection of seashells; two cabinets with a mineral collection and a herbarium.

From his book collection there are today about 50 incunabula in the Bodleian Library in Oxford, in the British Library London and the Royal Library Albert I Brussels, in another library in Brussels, others are in the University Library of Münster (28 from the "Bibliotheca Paulina" and others from the Collectio Erhard). Books from his collection still appear on the art market today.

Works (selection)

With his large library and collections, he was able to draw on the full in his scientific work. He published a large number of essays and wrote over thirty books during his life. It is not surprising that the book collector also dealt with the history of book printing.
