Live and act

Deleuze came from a noble family from Sisteron in south-east France and began studying mathematics in Paris in 1772 to prepare for a military career. Since he was not nominated for further training, he returned to Sisteron and acquired the patent of a sub-lieutenant in the infantry. After his unit was dissolved as a result of a reorganization, he dealt with private studies, especially in the field of botany . In 1787 he returned to Paris and came into contact with the botanist L'Héritier , who temporarily took part in his research. In 1795 he was appointed assistant ( aide-naturalist ) at the Paris Museum of Natural History and was involved in the publication of the Museum's Annales , the first volume of which was published under his direction in 1802. During the restoration , he temporarily acted as censor for the weekly Le nain jaune . In 1828 he was appointed to the vacant position of the museum's librarian, which he held until his retirement (1834).

Deleuze has researched and published on numerous topics, and has also translated literary works from English ( Erasmus Darwin , James Thomson ), but he gained fame above all for his writings on animal magnetism , in which he is a passionate follower of the teachings of Mesmer and Puysegur occurred. Following on from his teacher Puyégur, he also dealt with hypnosis and is considered the discoverer of post-hypnotic suggestion.

Deleuze was a Knight of the Legion of Honor and a member of numerous philanthropic and academic societies. In 1817 he was elected a member of the American Philosophical Society .
