Joseph Scherer (painter)

Joseph Scherer (born November 1, 1814 in Ettelried near Dinkelscherben in Swabia, † March 25, 1891 in Ettelried) was a German painter and glass painter .

Life

Joseph Scherer attended the art school in Augsburg with Liberat Hundertpfund and Johann Geyer at the age of 14 . He then studied from May 11, 1832 at the Royal Academy of Arts in Munich with Joseph Schlotthauer and Heinrich Maria von Hess . He learned the art of glass painting under his teacher Wilhelm Vörtl . He earned his studies by copying old masters on glass and he also had his brothers Alois (1818–1887) and Leo (1827–1876) study in Munich.

Scherer painted genre pictures , frescoes and altar paintings . However, he mainly devoted himself to glass painting, for which he received commissions in Germany, Europe and the United States. In 1853 he and his brothers founded their own glass painting workshop in Munich, which he ran until the death of his brother Leo in 1876.

  • around 1857: Altarpiece with the crucifixion group in the chapel of Zusameck Castle
  • around 1880: Altarpiece with St. Felizitas and her seven sons in the Catholic parish church of St. Felizitas in Anried
  • from 1876: facade painting on the Schererhaus
  • 1879/83: Ceiling painting in the house chapel of Wettenhausen Monastery
