Georg Adam Joseph Schmitt OCist (baptized March 18, 1734 in Gernsheim ; † May 28, 1791 in Amsterdam ) was a German composer and music publisher.
Life
Schmitt received music lessons in Dresden from Carl Friedrich Abel . At the age of 19 he became a member of the Cistercian order of the Eberbachs monastery , in 1757 he was ordained a priest. From 1763 he was the monastery choirmaster and organized the church music. During this time Schmitt wrote four masses , a Requiem and a Te Deum .
In 1771 he moved to Amsterdam, where he later founded his own music publisher. In addition to compositions by Haydn and Mozart , Schmitt also published his own works here and thus achieved a certain fame in Europe. His compositions were reprinted in London, Paris and Berlin as early as 1780. A total of 107 works by Joseph Schmitt are documented, some of which were temporarily ascribed to Haydn.
From 1788 he was the conductor of the Felix Meritis Society .
