Joseph Sherman Frelinghuysen junior (born August 11, 1912 in East Hampton , New York , † January 8, 2005 in Morristown , New Jersey ) was the author of a book entitled "Passages to Freedom" , which describes his escape from a prison camp in Italy describes during the Second World War .

Life

Frelinghuysen was the son of Joseph Sherman Frelinghuysen Sr. , a member of the New Jersey Senate and future US Senator . He graduated from Princeton University in 1934 . During the Second World War he served as an artillery captain in the 1st US Infantry Division in North Africa , where he was captured by German troops on November 23, 1942 and imprisoned in a prison camp in Italy. On September 23, 1943, he and another American prisoner of war fled this camp and then rejoined the Allied troops.

After the war, Frelinghuysen worked for an insurance company and later managed the family dairy business in Somerville , New Jersey. At the end of his life he lived in Far Hills , New Jersey, where he died of pneumonia in Morristown.
