Joseph Wilhelm Ludwig Mack

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Joseph Wilhelm Ludwig Mack the Elder (born March 27, 1767 in Ludwigsburg , † August 17, 1835 in Tübingen ) was a classicistic Württemberg sculptor of regional importance. He created his few surviving works based on models from other artists. Mack is the father of Ludwig Mack , who was also a sculptor.

Life

From 1782 to 1792 Mack attended the Hohe Carlsschule in Stuttgart, where he studied under the sculptors Johann Heinrich Dannecker and Philipp Jakob Scheffauer from 1790 to 1792 . In 1807 or earlier he was appointed royal plasterer in Stuttgart. From 1818 he also worked in Stuttgart as a teacher for drawing lessons at the grammar school, from 1829 at the art school and from 1832 at the trade school.

meaning

Mack seems to have mainly carried out sculptural work based on models and templates from other artists. So he has u. a. supported his former teachers Dannecker and Scheffauer in their work. The only known, independent works are the plaster bust of the Countess von Beroldingen and perhaps the bas-relief on the Härlin tomb.

References and comments

  1. ^ The name Johann Ludwig Mack given in Bach 1900, page 109, is incorrect. In the matriculation of the Hohen Carlsschule (Carlsschule 1788, page 22, Carlsschule 1792, page 27) and Wagner 1856, page 458, Mack is listed with the first name Joseph Wilhelm Ludwig. - The names of Joseph Wilhelm Ludwig Mack and his son Ludwig Mack are sometimes given the nickname "the elder" or "the younger" in literature, because both probably followed the nickname Ludwig.
  2. The older literature (Wagner 1856, page 458, Bach 1900, page 109) gives 1766 as the year of birth. The more recent literature (Pfeiffer 1912, page 140, footnote 1, Holst 1993, page 449) gives 1767.
  3. ^ At the same time as Mack, his fellow Ludwigsburg compatriot Friedrich Distelbarth, who was almost the same age, attended the Hohe Carlsschule. While Mack was appointed court plasterer at the latest in 1807, Distelbarth had to wait until 1816 for his appointment as court sculptor.
