Joseph Wilms
Peter Joseph Wilms (born August 2, 1814 in Düsseldorf - Bilk ; † October 28, 1892 in Düsseldorf) was a German still life painter from the Düsseldorf School .
Life
A “nervous fever” robbed the nine-year-old of hearing and speech. At the age of 14, the deaf and mute began studying painting at the Düsseldorf Art Academy in 1829 with Theodor Hildebrandt and Wilhelm von Schadow . He didn't finish it until 1852. Because of his work in the field of still life painting, he soon caused a stir. Johann Peter Hasenclever depicted Wilms in the painting studio scene in 1836 . In 1848 he made a study trip to Strasbourg and in 1862 to Amsterdam , where he stayed for a year.

Wilms mainly painted still lifes, the compositions of which are reminiscent of Johann Wilhelm Preyer , and occasionally animal and genre pictures as well as portraits . He is one of those painters who broke away from the academic teaching tradition of Wilhelm von Schadow by painting, from his point of view, “objects of second choice” that “demolished the sublime and poetic idea in art” ( Ekkehard Mai ). The vanitas still life Die Nachlass des Ludwig von Milewski , created in 1849, has a special meaning , which uses trompe l'œil painting to fix the memory of a painter friend who was shot in the barricade during the German Revolution in the form of symbolic objects . Friedrich von Boetticher counted him among the "most important still life painters" at the end of the 19th century.
