Joseph Bergaigne (. Also dt Joseph of Bergaigne , fr. Joseph de Bergaigne ) (* 1. May 1588 in Antwerp ; † 12. October 1647 in Münster ) was Franciscan , Bishop of 's-Hertogenbosch , Archbishop of Cambrai and Spanish ambassador in the negotiations for the Peace of Westphalia .

Life

He came from an originally Italian family that came from Bergamo . He entered the Franciscan order and was educated in Spain. He received his doctorate in theology and philosophy . He then taught theology in Cologne and Mainz . In 1616 he became Provincial of the Franciscans in the Rhine Province. Two years later he became General Commissioner of the Order for Germany and the Netherlands.

He also served various princes, including the Spanish king and the emperor as envoy. In 1636 he was in Ferdinand III's election as king . successful as a negotiator. The Spanish king proposed him in 1638 as bishop of 's-Hertogenbosch. He received papal confirmation and episcopal ordination in 1641. This had no factual significance in a largely Reformed city and in a diocese occupied by the Dutch. He received little income and he could not reside in the city. He was the last bishop of the diocese since 1648 the Spaniards ceded the diocese to the Netherlands. In 1646 he was also named Archbishop of Cambrai. Before he could take this post personally, Philip IV entrusted him with a post as envoy to the negotiations for the Peace of Westphalia in Munster.

As a Spanish councilor in 1639 and 1643/44 he conducted fruitless negotiations with the Netherlands for a peace treaty. In 1645 he became part of the legation that was supposed to negotiate peace in Münster. He took second place in the Spanish embassy. Because the first envoy Gaspar de Bracamonte y Guzmán was often ill, de Bergaigne had great tasks to do. In 1646 he is said to have traveled to the Netherlands to campaign for a quick peace agreement. In 1647 he was in Brussels to dispel theological concerns about peace. On January 7, 1647, the draft contract was initialed by the Spanish and Dutch ambassadors in his domicile, the Obervantenkloster in Münster. Before the official conclusion of the negotiations, he died in October 1647. He was buried in the Poor Clare Church in Münster. In 1663 his body was transferred to Antwerp. There he was buried in the Franciscan Church.
