Johannes Zwijsen

Johannes Zwijsen (born August 28, 1794 in Kerkdriel , † October 16, 1877 in 's-Hertogenbosch ) was the first Roman Catholic Archbishop of Utrecht after the re-establishment of the Catholic Church in the Netherlands .

Life

Zwijsen was ordained a priest on January 19, 1817 . On January 24, 1842, Zwijsen was appointed titular bishop of Gerrha , vicar apostolic of the small vicariates of Grave-Nijmegen and Ravenstein-Megen, and coadjutor of the vicar apostle of 's-Hertogenbosch. On April 17, 1842 he received in the Church of St. Dionysius in Tilburg by the consecrator Bishop Cornelius Ludovicus de Wijkerslooth the episcopal ordination . His motto was mansuete et fortiter (gentle and strong). From 1847 to 1848 he was Pro-Apostolic Vicar of the Dutch Mission ( Hollandse Zending ) and Chargé d'affaires of the diplomatic mission of the Holy See in The Hague . In 1851 Auxiliary Bishop Henricus den Dubbelden, Apostolic Vicar of the Apostolic Vicariate 's Hertogenbosch, died. Because of his position as coadjutor, Zwijsen was his immediate successor. The Apostolic Vicariates Grave-Nijmegen and Ravenstein-Megen were dissolved in this context and incorporated into the Apostolic Vicariate 's Hertogenbosch.

Zwijsen was friends with King Wilhelm II , who as Crown Prince was Commander-in-Chief of the Tilburg garrison from 1830 to 1839. During this time, Zwijsen was the parish priest in Tilburg. This friendship has helped to improve relations between the (traditionally Protestant) royal family and the Catholic clergy of the Netherlands. In 1844 he founded the Fraters van Tilburg .

When Pope Pius IX. In 1853 reorganized the Catholic Church in the Netherlands , Utrecht became an archbishopric again and Zwijsen became its first archbishop . He was also appointed bishop of the diocese of 's-Hertogenbosch , where he had previously served as Vicar Apostolic since 1851. Zwijsen worked hard to rebuild the Archdiocese of Utrecht and was able to reopen the seminary there in 1857 . In 1858 the cathedral chapter was built and in 1864 the first provincial synod was held. In 1868 Zwijsen resigned as Archbishop of Utrecht, but remained Bishop of the Diocese of 's-Hertogenbosch until his death in 1877.
