Van der Bruch became a canon at the collegiate church of Saint-Wandru in Bergen . On January 13, 1593 he was appointed canon, later by King Philip II as chapter dean at the cathedral of Mechelen . There he won the trust of Archbishop Mathias Hovius . This appointed him on October 26, 1596 vicar general of the Archdiocese of Mechelen .

On June 15, 1612 van der Burch was appointed Bishop of Ghent by Albrecht VII of Habsburg and Isabella Clara Eugenia of Spain . After the Pope's approval , he was ordained bishop on February 17, 1613 . When the plague broke out in Bergen in 1614 , the bishop sent a relic there at the request of the city . After the plague ended, the city felt indebted to the bishop.

Van der Burch's appointment as Prince Archbishop and Duke of Cambrai took place on May 2, 1616. There, too, there was plague and famine during his reign . The bishop therefore cared for the poor and needy in a variety of ways.

Van der Burch died in Bergen, where he was on a pastoral trip at the time. He was first buried in the Jesuit church in Cambrai , but after the Jesuit order was banned in 1779, he was transferred to the Cathedral of Cambrai .
