François Buisseret (born September 1549 in Bergen ; † May 2, 1615 in Valenciennes ) was a university professor , Roman Catholic bishop and regent of the monastery of Cambrai .

Life

Buisseret lost his father at an early age. His mother therefore took care of his education. He first attended the chapter school Saint-Germain von Bergen, a grande école , then he was taught at the college of Houdain . The talented student went through philosophy at the Pédagogie du Lys of the University of Leuven and became professor of philosophy there at the age of 18 . He pursued further studies, studied law and theology and obtained a licentiate in law in 1574 .

1574 Pope appointed him Sixtus IV. To the canons of the Cathedral of Cambrai . However, Buisseret was given the right to travel to Italy first . He went to Rome and the University of Bologna . In Italy, he received the priesthood and was in Bologna for a doctor of law doctorate . After the Prince Archbishop of Cambrai , Ludwig von Berlaymont , had to flee the French attacks to Bergen, he went to Paris , where he taught canon law .

Buisseret returned to Bergen and was successively chapter dean , archdeacon and vicar general of the chapter under Berlaymont. Among other things, he made a name for himself in the negotiations about Cambrai with the French and his work for the 1586 Synod. On December 3, 1601, he was awarded the bishopric of Namur . On February 10, 1602, Guillaume de Berghes , Archbishop of Cambrai, gave him episcopal ordination ; Co- consecrators were Michael d'Esne , Bishop of Tournai , and Jean du Ploich , Bishop of Arras . He led his diocese with great zeal, was considered to be strictly bound by the old principles and vehemently opposed new ideas. He founded a Sunday school in Namur and sent the Jesuits to his diocese.

After earlier attempts at the office of Prince Archbishop and Duke of Cambrai failed, he was awarded the office on February 9, 1615, from March 24 of the same year he held it. Shortly afterwards he suddenly passed away.

He was buried in the Cathedral of Cambrai.
