Joshua Goldstein
Joshua R. Goldstein (born August 18, 1965 in Pullman (Washington) , ( USA )) is an American population scientist and sociologist , professor of demography , sociology and public affairs and former director at the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research .
Life
Joshua Goldstein made his 1983 high school Accounts at the "South Eugene High School" and enrolled at the Yale University , where he graduated in 1987 with a BA in history. Goldstein concluded in 1990 his master's degree in demography and social sciences at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales in Paris and received his doctorate in 1996 with the thesis The Demography of Family and Kinship in on Age of Divorce and Remarriage in Berkeley at the University of California for Ph.D. of demographics. At the time of his doctorate, Goldstein was an advisor to the National Statistics Committee of the National Academy of Sciences .
After completing his doctorate, Goldstein was appointed assistant professor for sociology and public affairs at Princeton University in 1996 , from which he worked as a visiting scholar in 1998 at the Institut National d'Etudes Demographiques in Paris, and in Berkeley at the University's Department of Demography in 2000 of California and in 2002 to Vienna at the Vienna Institute of Demography of the Austrian Academy of Sciences . Joshua Goldstein was appointed associate professor of sociology and public affairs at Princeton University in 2002, before being made full professor in 2007. During his time at Princeton , Goldstein worked at the traditional Office of Population Research . Goldstein became the youngest of ten members of the National Research Council's Population Committee in 2006 .
In 2007 Joshua Goldstein accepted the Max Planck Society's call to succeed Jan M. Hoem as second director at the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research in Rostock. In August 2013 he left the institute and became a professor at the University of California, Berkeley , where he also heads the Department of Demography. Goldstein is also a member of the Population Association of America (PAA) and the International Union for the Scientific Study of Population . He was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2017 .
