Josiah Abigail Patterson Campbell

Josiah Abigail Patterson Campbell (born March 2, 1830 in Camden , Kershaw County , South Carolina ; † January 10, 1917 in Jackson , Mississippi ) was a prominent Confederate politician .

Born in South Carolina, Campbell later moved to Mississippi, where he was a member of the state parliament between 1851 and 1859 . In 1861 he took part in the State Secession Convention . He was also active between 1861 and 1862 in the Provisional Confederate Congress , where he was its pro tempore president . When the American Civil War broke out, he was serving as a colonel in the Confederate Army . After the war he was Chief Justice of the Mississippi Supreme Court from 1891 to 1894 , of which he had already belonged from 1889. Campbell died in 1917.
