Josiah Gilbert
Josiah Gilbert (born October 7, 1814 in Rotherham in Yorkshire , † August 10, 1892 in London ) was an English painter , draftsman, explorer and art writer and art critic.
The son of the couple Joseph and Ann Gilbert was baptized on February 9, 1815 in the Nether Chapel Norfolk Street-Independent in Sheffield, Yorkshire.
Gilbert attended the Royal Academy of Arts in London , where he first worked as a portrait painter, but in 1843 he moved to Marden Ash near Ongar , where he has lived since then, busy with literary and artistic work.
He traveled to the Dolomites with George Cheetham Churchill and wrote the travel guide The Dolomite Mountains (published in 1864) with him between 1861 and 1863 . Both were members of the Geological Society of London and so the book contains not only travelogues in the form of letters to friends at home but also geological chapters. The book was published in 1864, the German translation in 1865.
