Jossyf Tukalskyj-Neljubovyč ( Ukrainian Йосиф Тукальський-Нелюбович , scientific transliteration Josyf Tukal's'kyj-Neljubovyč ; * in Pinsk ; † July 26, 1675 in Tschyhyryn ) was a Ukrainian clergyman and politician.

Life

In 1657 the clergyman , who had previously lived in the Holy Spirit Monastery in Vilnius, was nominated as a candidate for the Kiev metropolitan post. In 1661 he became bishop of Worscha and Mstislau (in today's Belarus ), and in 1663 a Sobor assembly in Korsun elected him Metropolitan of Kiev . The Polish king refused to accept the election because he preferred Bishop Antonij Wynnytskyj . This led to an administrative schism in the Ukrainian Orthodox Church . Tukalsky-Neliubowitsch's area of influence as a Kiev metropolitan only included the right bank Ukraine , Belarus and Lithuania , but not Galicia , Volhynia and Podilien . This led to tension with the Polish government and the pro-Polish Cossack hetman Pawlo Teterja .

In 1664 Tukalsky-Neliubowitsch was arrested by Pavlo Teterja and held in the Marienburg fortress for two years . Hetman Petro Doroshenko was finally able to obtain his release and reinstated him as a Kiev metropolitan. In 1668 the Patriarch of Constantinople confirmed the status of metropolitan and named him Exarch .

After his release, Tukalsky-Neliubowitsch moved to Tschyhyryn, where the seat of government of the Cossack state was at that time. He worked there as an advisor to the Cossack leader Petro Doroshenko . He particularly campaigned for the Cossack leader to absolve himself of alliances with the Russian Empire or Poland and seek support from the Ottoman Empire .

In church politics, Tukalsky-Neliubowitsch defended independence as a Kiev metropolitan against attempts to take possession of it from Moscow. This led to conflicts with the Moscow representative in Kiev, Bishop Maksym Fylymonovich . After his death, Tukalsky-Neliubowitsch was buried in the Transfiguration Monastery of Mhar near Lubny .
