Jost Schramm
Jost Schramm (* 24. September 1926 in Heidelberg , † 27. July 2001 in Pozza di Fassa ) was a German architect of modernity .
Life and education
Jost Schramm was the son of the historian Percy Ernst Schramm and the member of the state parliament Ehrengard Schramm nee von Thadden . His mother's siblings included the resistance fighter Elisabeth von Thadden, who was murdered by the National Socialists, and Reinold von Thadden, the founding president of the German Evangelical Church Congress . The historian Gottfried Schramm , who was also a proctor of the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg for a few years , was his brother.
Jost Schramm attended schools in Göttingen and Berlin . During the last phase of World War II , he did military service and was taken prisoner after the war. Influenced by his uncle and architect Gottfried Schramm , he began studying architecture in Braunschweig with Friedrich Wilhelm Kraemer in 1947 . In 1949 he continued his studies at the Technical University of Karlsruhe with Egon Eiermann . With Kraemer and Eiermann, Schramm learned from the most important representatives of modern architecture.
Working as an architect
After completing his studies, he took on a job at the architecture office Elingius & Schramm . The office, headed by his uncle and Erich Elingius , worked on numerous projects as part of the reconstruction of the Hanseatic city after the end of the Second World War . In 1953/54 Schramm received his first own project with the new construction of the Hamburger Sparkasse building on the Großer Burstah . In 1956 he planned the Alsen house on Holzbrücke, and in 1958 the Hertz house on the Große Bleichen . Schramm's designs with filigree facades followed the ideal of structural loosening and significantly expanded the previously rather conservative profile of the architectural office.
In 1956, the office took on Jost as a partner. Due to the booming construction industry, Schramm achieved great professional success early on. In 1965, the partners closed the office after Gottfried Schramm had left the firm for reasons of age. Together with Gerd Pempelfort , Schramm then founded a new office and devoted himself increasingly to abstract topics, including prefabrication and open-plan offices , including the headquarters of Esso Germany in the City-Nord and apartments in Steilshoop , Jenfeld and Billstedt . The Schramm + Pempelfort office was one of the leading architects of construction in Hamburg, whereby design aspects mostly took a backseat in the buildings designed.
Due to several major projects, including the Congress Center Hamburg and today's Radisson Blu Hotel near Dammtor train station , other partners joined the office, including Stephan Hupertz in 1971 , followed by Horst von Bassewitz in 1975. In the following years , Jost Schramm devoted himself more to association work and in 1974 became President of the Hamburg Chamber of Architects and from 1978 Vice President of the Federal Chamber of Architects . The office also expanded in the following years and carried out activities throughout northern Germany. Schramm left the office in 1993.
Jost Schramm died on July 27, 2001 while hiking in Pozza di Fassa in the Dolomites .
