Jovan Hranilović

Jovan Hranilović (born December 18, 1855 in Kričke near Drniš , Austria-Hungary , today Croatia ; † August 5, 1924 in Novi Sad , Kingdom of Yugoslavia , today Serbia ) was a Yugoslav writer , poet and Greek Catholic priest of the Križevci diocese .

Life

Jovan Hranilović grew up in Žumberak, Croatia, in early childhood . After the death of his father in 1864 he lived with his mother in Križevci (Croatia) , where he finished primary school. His further education took place in the Greek Catholic Konvikt in Zagreb .

After graduating from high school, Hranilović successfully studied theology in Zagreb and Vienna . He returned in 1876 after Križevci back Catholic Greek became a priest ordained . Hranilović was initially secretary in the diocese of Križevci under Bishop Julije Drohobeczky . As a pastor he was pastorally active in various Greek Catholic parishes on Croatian territory, and later in Vojvodina .

Hranilović was inclined to the Croatian Illyrian movement . As a writer, his lyric poems made him famous, including the "Žumberačke elegije" ( Eng . Žumberk elegies , the homeland of his childhood) published in 1885 . It followed in 1890 the publication of the "Pjesme svakidanke" (Eng. "The everyday songs") and in 1893 Hranilović published the "Izabrane pjesme" (Eng. "The selected songs"). Jovan Hranilović also wrote novellas and published literary reviews. He died in Novi Sad in 1924 .
