history
The city of Drniš is first mentioned on March 8, 1494 in a sales contract under the name Sub Darnis .
In 1522 Drniš suffered the same fate as the rest of northern Dalmatia. The city and the surrounding area fall into Turkish hands . On some drawings from the 18th century you can see five mosques. Today only two of them are partially preserved. Parts of the minaret can still be seen from one of them . The other mosque has been converted into the Church of St. Anthony .
During the war from 1645 to 1669 there were repeated battles between the Republic of Venice and the Turks over the city of Drniš, so that the city constantly had new rulers. Eventually Drnis is destroyed and burned down by the Venetian Republic. In 1670 the city fell again into the hands of the Ottoman Empire, but this time the city was liberated from the people of the area (Zagorans) under the leadership of Mate Nakić - Vojnović in 1683 . Mate Nakić - Vojnović then received the title Sirdar from the Republic of Venice.
In 1797 the Austro-Hungarian monarchy took power in Drniš. This lasted until 1806 when this region fell to Napoleon's France on the basis of a peace treaty. However, France can only maintain its position for a few years, so that from 1813 to 1918 the Austro-Hungarian monarchy again directed the fortunes of the city.
After the First World War, Drniš was under Italian occupation for a few years from 1918 to April 5, 1921 and could only be integrated into the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes after peace negotiations.
After the city at the beginning of the Croatia war captured by Serb troops and the predominantly Croatian population was expelled, the controlled Republic of Serbian Krajina town. As part of Operation Oluja , the city was recaptured and the Serbian irregulars were driven out.
Most of the Croatian residents have meanwhile returned and have partially rebuilt the place.
