Joy Harington

Joy Harington (born February 22, 1914 in London , † October 22, 1991 in Bristol ) was a British actress with character roles in film, television and the theater. She also worked as a screenwriter , producer and director on television.

Life

Harington began her acting career in the 1930s with appearances in various theater groups in England . In 1938 she moved to the United States and continued her stage work there. In the Paramount Studios in Hollywood first, she worked as a dramaturge and dialogue director before in the drama 1943 Forever and a Day finally made her film debut as an actress. During her time in Hollywood, she appeared in a total of 13 films, mostly only in minor supporting roles. Including in films like The House of Lady Alquist by George Cukor , Little Girl, Big Heart by Clarence Brown or My Name is Julia Ross by Joseph H. Lewis . Director John Farrow's 1947 film Calcutta with Alan Ladd in the lead role, a crime thriller set against an exotic backdrop, was her last Hollywood production, after which she returned to England. There she continued her acting career and played in British productions like Schlafwagen nach Triest by John Paddy Carstairs , Adam and Evelyne by Harold French or in Die Rivalin by director Charles Bennett .

Back in London, Joy Harington joined the BBC as a stage manager. In 1950 she stopped her acting career to work as a producer for BBC children's television and for the next thirteen years excelled in productions of children's classics such as Treasure Island (BBC, 1951) Kidnapped (BBC, 1952; staged in 1956), Jos Boys (BBC, 1959) or Heidi (BBC, 1959).

In 1956 she was honored with the Guild of Television Producers and Directors (now BAFTA ) award for the eight-part television series Jesus of Nazareth (BBC) . A live studio production with field recordings in Galilee and Jerusalem.

Until she left the BBC in 1970, Harington worked in religious programs, schools, and continuing education. She returned to acting in 1972 primarily in television films and television miniseries, but occasionally appeared in television series such as Sykes and Are You Being Served? or the fourth season of Quatermass. In 1978 she played the housekeeper Mrs. Brooks in Dorothea Brookings for the BBC- produced children's television miniseries The Moonshimmel alongside actors such as James Greene , Sarah Sutton , David Haig and Caroline Goodall .

Joy Harington died in Bristol on October 22, 1991 at the age of 77.
