Jozef Kroner (often incorrectly spelled Króner ) (born March 20, 1924 in Staškov , † March 12, 1998 in Bratislava ) was a Slovak actor, a prominent figure in film in the former Czechoslovakia . He also played leading roles in many Czech and Hungarian films. In a vote by Slovak film journalists in 2000, he was voted the best Slovak actor of the 20th century.

Life

Kroner came from a family with 12 children (seven of them became actors). He never studied acting. Kroner worked as a painter in Trenčín , and later he was entrusted with running a workshop in Považská Bystrica . During this time he played as an amateur actor in amateur theater. In 1948 he got his first engagement at a Slovak chamber theater (army theater) in Turčiansky Svätý Martin . From 1956 until his retirement in 1984 he worked in the drama theater of the Slovak National Theater in Bratislava.

Kroner made his film debut in 1950 in Ján Kadár's Katka . He achieved international fame in 1965 for his role as the Slovak Aryan in Obchod na korze , directed by Ján Kadár and Elmar Klos . At the Cannes Film Festival in 1965 he received a special mention together with Ida Kamińska for his acting performance in the film based on a template by Ladislav Grosman . Kroner was also honored as best actor at the film festival of the working people of the Czechoslovakia. In the 1970s he appeared in several Hungarian films , including the critically acclaimed Vegül by Gyula Maár . His role as old Pichanda, a versatile head of a Slovak family before the First World War, in the epic chronicle Millennial Bee (1982) was the most prominent of his appearances in three Czechoslovak-West German co-productions in 1982.

In 1967, Kroner was named "Honored Artist" and in 1978 National Artist of Czechoslovakia. In 1970 he published the first of several books on acting. The film director Fero Fenič filmed Kroner's life in 1985 in the television film Trate života Josefa Kronera . In 1989 Kroner was nominated for the European Film Award for Best Actor for his role in the film Ti, kojto si nebeto .

His nephew Ján Kroner and his daughter Zuzana Kronerová are also well-known actors.
