Juan José Arévalo
Juan José Arévalo Bermejo (born September 10, 1905 in Taxisco , † October 6, 1990 in Guatemala City ) was the first reformist President of Guatemala .
The son of a cattle farmer and a teacher attended school in Guatemala City and studied at the University of La Plata . In 1934 he received his doctorate in philosophy .
After the end of Jorge Ubico's dictatorship in Guatemala in 1944 , he was democratically elected President from March 15, 1945 to March 15, 1951. He represented the thesis of “spiritual socialism”, which he described in a speech as follows:
“(...) Our socialism wants to liberate people spiritually and spiritually. (...) We call this post-war socialism 'spiritual' because a fundamental change is taking place in the world, like now in Guatemala. (...) Communism, fascism and Nazism were also socialist. But this is a socialism that nourishes with the left hand, while with the right it mutilates the moral and civil rights of the people. "
He initiated urgently needed structural reforms; its main goals were agricultural reform, occupational health and safety, an improvement in the education system and the consolidation of democracy. His successor was Jacobo Árbenz Guzmán , who continued his reform course.
On March 28, 1963, José Miguel Ramón Idígoras Fuentes appeared before the Guatemalan press and presented Arévalo as a candidate for the presidency. On March 31, 1963, Idígoras was overthrown from key positions by Alfredo Enrique Peralta Azurdia and 15 other army colonels .
