Juan Pablo Varillas Patiño-Samudio (born October 6, 1995 in Lima ) is a Peruvian tennis player .

Career

Varillas began his professional career on the underclass ITF Future Tour . He played his first full season in 2014, where he also won his first double title on the Future Tour. A year later he made his debut for the Peruvian Davis Cup team , but he lost all three singles and doubles. In the following years he could not improve significantly in the world rankings , it was only in 2017 that he made it into the top 500 in an individual.

In 2018 he achieved his first individual title wins at future level, which was accompanied by a further improvement in the world rankings. At the South American Games he won the bronze medal in singles , in doubles he lost the final with Jorge Panta against the Ecuadorian pairing and won the silver medal.

A year later he competed in the Pan American Games in his home country. In singles he failed in the quarterfinals against the later finalist Marcelo Tomás Barrios Vera , in doubles he won the bronze medal with his partner Sergio Galdós . In October, Varillas managed to win two tournaments on the ATP Challenger Tour within two consecutive weeks . He won twelve games in a row. His first title win in São Paulo was the first individual title of a Peruvian since Luis Horna , who won the last time in Lugano in 2008. After his second title in Santo Domingo , he reached a new career high with 161st place.
