Juan Ponce

Juan Ponce (* around 1476, † after 1520) was a Spanish composer of the Renaissance.

Life

Juan Ponce's exact origins are in the dark; Seville in Andalusia , but also Arbeca in the province of Lleida , are mentioned as possible places of origin . He probably came from the noble Ponce de León family, which produced several musicians. In his youth he was a student of the Sicilian humanist Lucio Marineo Siculo (around 1460-1533), who taught from 1484-1496 at the University of Salamanca . Marineo mentions him in 1514 in his Epistolarum familiarium as cantor regius ("royal singer"). As such, he was inducted into the Royal Court Chapel of Aragón on September 1, 1506 . He remained a member there until the chapel was dissolved after the death of Ferdinand the Catholic in 1516. After that, he possibly moved to the chapel of King Charles I. On the other hand, he had already been offered a benefit on the island of Lanzarote in 1512 , so that he might then move there. The revised version of one of his compositions contains references to events from 1521, but the revision could have been made without Ponce's participation. After that his track is lost.
