Juan Ramón Martínez (born April 20, 1948 in San Miguel ), also known by the nickname Mon , is a former Salvadoran football player . He first played in attack and is considered the best Salvadoran center forward who was also a sure penalty taker . He later switched to the offensive midfield as a game designer with the number 10.

Life

“Mon” Martínez began his footballing career in the youth division of his home club, Club Deportivo Águila , where he also received his first professional contract in 1964 . In 1965 he moved to the Guatemalan association CSD Municipal , where he stayed until 1967. With the only foreign station of his playing career, he won the Guatemalan football championship in 1966 and, before returning to Club Deportivo Águila, also the Guatemalan cup competition .

Immediately after his return home, he won the Salvadoran football championship for the first time with Club Deportivo Águila in the 1967/68 season . He won his second Salvadoran championship title in 1971 with the CD Juventud Olímpica , for which he was also used for several years and which competed in the 1974/75 season under the name Negocios Internacionales . Martínez later played for the CD Once Municipal and the CD Atlético Marte , where he ended his active career in 1982.

National team

Between 1967 and 1976 Martínez completed a total of 32 missions for the Salvadoran national soccer team , in which he scored 14 goals. In the qualifying games for the football World Cup in Mexico in 1970 , Martínez was the most successful Salvadoran player with 7 goals and thus played a major role in El Salvador's first qualification for participation in a football World Cup. It was also the first time that a country from Central America was able to qualify for the World Cup finals.

His most important goal, through which he became a national hero, Martínez scored on October 8, 1969 in the decisive third final game for a 1-0 win over Haiti . After his return home, Martínez was celebrated by the media and appeared on some front pages, embraced by the then President of the country, General Fidel Sánchez Hernández . Already in the semi-finals of the qualifying tournament Martínez had contributed with his two goals to the decisive 3-2 victory against Honduras , which resulted in a football war with the neighboring country . At the 1970 World Cup, Martínez played the two group 1 matches against Belgium (3-0) and hosts Mexico (4-0).

Due to the civil war raging in Salvador, among other things , Martínez emigrated to the United States , where he settled in California .
