Judd Buchanan

J. Judd Buchanan PC OC (born July 25, 1929 in Edmonton , Alberta ) is a Canadian entrepreneur , insurance salesman and politician for the Liberal Party of Canada who was a member of the House of Commons and Minister.

Life

After attending school, Buchanan completed a degree from which he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (BA). He completed a subsequent postgraduate course in management with a Master of Business Administration (MBA) and a further degree in law with a doctorate in law (LL.D.). He then worked as a life insurance agent and as an entrepreneur.

He began his political career as a member of the School Board of London , of which he was a member between 1966 and 1968. In the general election of June 25, 1968 Buchanan was elected as a candidate of the Liberal Party for the first time as a member of the House of Commons and represented the constituency of London West in this until his resignation in August 1980 .

In October 1970 he took over his first government office as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Indian Affairs and Northern Development, before he was then from February to September 1972 Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Finance.

Having until May 9, 1974 was chaired by the Standing House of Commons Committee on Indian Affairs and Northern Development of 4 January 1973, he was on August 8, 1974 by Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau in the 20th Cabinet of Canada appointed, first to 13th September 1976 as Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development and then until November 23, 1978 as Minister of Public Works, before he was President of the Treasury between November 24, 1978 and the end of Trudeau's term on June 3, 1979. At the same time he was Minister of State for Science and Technology from September 16, 1977 to November 23, 1978.

After leaving Parliament, he returned to the private sector and became President and Chief Executive Officer of Calgary- based CNG Fuels Ltd. In 1995 he became chairman of the Canadian Tourism Commission established to promote tourism in Canada and held that position until December 2, 2002.

For his decades of service in politics and business, Buchanan was appointed Officer of the Order of Canada on November 15, 2000 .
