Don Bosco Mondo eV is a catholic non-governmental organization founded in 1980 under the name of Youth Third World with headquarters in Bonn , which works in collaboration with the Salesians of Don Bosco for excluded and disadvantaged children and young people. The group, organized as a non-profit organization , has had its current name since January 28, 2012 .
Education and development cooperation as objectives
The aim of the non-profit association is to fight poverty with education . In numerous projects in Africa , Asia , Latin America and Eastern Europe , attempts are being made to give street children , child laborers , child soldiers and children from the poorest families, regardless of religion , nationality and gender, access to education and individual support. This funding is designed to help people help themselves. The main focus of Don Bosco Mondo's work is simple and adapted vocational training .
Collaboration with the Salesians of Don Bosco
The association's partner is the religious order of the Salesians of Don Bosco, which works for young people in need in 128 countries. In more than 800 vocational training centers run by the Salesians Don Bosco, young people receive vocational training tailored to the local job market. After completing their training, job placement and small loan programs support them in looking for a job or establishing an independent existence, for example in the project in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu . More than 1000 schools of the Salesians of Don Bosco also provide access to education. In socially disadvantaged areas, they give disadvantaged children a new chance, for example through special bridging courses for school dropouts or former child laborers to reintegrate them into school. In Cambodia , the Don Bosco Children Fund helps children on a kind of second educational path to graduate from school . In many countries around the world, street children receive an education in the Don Bosco Centers as well as a home in order to provide refuge and protection and to enable them to find their way into a regular life, for example in the Salesian Institute in Cape Town , South Africa. In terms of holistic development, the project work supported by Don Bosco Mondo also includes health programs, projects for the advancement of women or programs for rural development that secure the basic rights of children, young people and their families. In addition, there are emergency aid measures in the event of disasters, in which Don Bosco's Salesians, due to their worldwide activity, are often the first helpers who also know the region and can therefore provide efficient help.
Global learning projects in Europe
With educational campaigns, the association tries to bring issues of development cooperation to the public and to create awareness for global relationships in Germany. As part of projects on global learning, which are often networked at European level, the association offers teachers action-oriented teaching materials that aim to provide education for sustainable development in schools and to motivate students to get involved in a fairer world.
Computer game "Champions for South Africa"
A current example is the educational project “Champions for South Africa”, a computer game presented as an adventure story, which is supported by Don Bosco organizations in Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic, Poland, Italy and Spain. It has been sent to participating schools and other interested parties since December 2009. It is aimed at European children and young people, especially schoolchildren, with the aim of encouraging them to work for better future opportunities for their peers in South Africa, for example through the ideal support of South African action alliances. The reason for this project is the soccer World Cup in South Africa in 2010 . With a kind of backstage pass , the reality in South Africa can be granted as an adventure story, especially apart from the official advertising for the country.
Discover Sudan
As part of the previous project Discover Sudan , around 1800 school classes in Germany dealt with the situation of refugees in South Sudan .
World Cup campaign "1,000 balls for Brazil"
In the facilities of the Salesians Don Bosco and the club, football plays an important role in “getting children off the streets”. Sport offers children from poor backgrounds in particular a balance to their difficult everyday lives and promotes their social skills. They find a place in society more easily and learn tolerance and respect instead of the right of the stronger. For the soccer World Cup in Brazil, the club started the World Cup participation and donation campaign “1,000 balls for Brazil”. Under the umbrella of the BoscoArena , the new initiative for sport and development, Don Bosco Mondo wants to support work for children and young people on the margins of society. With the “1,000 balls for Brazil” campaign, the club takes a look beyond the edge of the football stadiums and provides information about the life of the people in the country of the World Cup. The initiative wants to show what football can do in Brazil. At 80 locations (including all 12 World Cup venues) the Salesians of Don Bosco look after more than 250,000 children and young people in 188 social and educational programs. Football and sport pave the way for a variety of social programs such as street children projects, cultural and leisure activities, reintegration into the school system and vocational training - important prerequisites for the children to develop new perspectives in life.
