Juglans hirsuta is a Mexican tree of the genus walnuts ( Juglans ).

features

Juglans hirsuta is a large, deciduous tree with a broad, spreading crown. Young twigs are reddish brown, with glandular hairs, sometimes with tufts of hair. In the second year they turn gray-brown. The marrow is light brown. The terminal bud is slender, elongated and hairy gray.

The leaves are large, paired, more rarely pinnate unpaired. A true terminal leaflet is usually missing. The rachis is mostly hairy, glandularly soft to rough, the hair is brown, with a few tufts of hair. The leaves usually have 16 to 21, rarely between 14 and 23 leaflets. The leaflets are opposite or nearly opposite, sometimes alternate. They are rather thick, somewhat wrinkled, oval to oval-lanceolate to elongated lanceolate. They are 2.5 to 6 cm wide and up to 15 cm long. The tip is very long-pointed. The edge is finely to roughly serrated, the teeth are often curved. The leaflet base is truncated or rounded, often asymmetrical. The upper side of the leaf is usually hairy either on the main nerves or on the entire surface, tufted hairs are missing. The underside is very hairy with whitish tufts and brown glandular hairs as well as single and paired, pointed white hairs.

The male kittens are 6 to 10 cm long. The flowers are not particularly crowded. The bract is short, oval-lanceolate, hairy white and sits on the back of the flower. The inflorescence includes the bract, two bracts and four, sometimes six stamens . Each flower has 20 to 34 stamens .

The female flowers are few together and are densely hairy. The fruits are medium to large, 3 to 4.7 cm in diameter, spherical to slightly pear-shaped or oval. They are very hairy, especially when they are young. The nut is dark red-brown to almost black, slightly compressed and about the same height as it is wide: 3 to 4 cm in diameter. It has numerous, irregular ribs, the furrows between them are rather deep. The ribs are usually rather sharp, the nuts generally resemble those of Juglans nigra . The secondary subjects are clearly defined, there are 4 to 8.

distribution
