Jules Patenôtre also Jules Patenôtre des Noyers (born April 20, 1845 in Baye , Département Marne , † 1925 ) was a French diplomat .

Life

He was trained at the École normal supérieure and initially taught for a few years at the Lycée technique d'Alger in Algiers . In 1871 he entered the diplomatic service. From 1873 and 1876 he was entrusted with tasks in the north of Persia . In 1880 he became ambassador plenipotentiary to Stockholm .

In September 1883 he became the French ambassador to China . In 1884 he diplomatically secured French supremacy in Annam . He negotiated with the King of Annam about the terms of the French protectorate .

He then negotiated in Shanghai about the evacuation of Tonkins by Chinese troops. However, the corresponding treaty was not ratified by the French parliament on August 25, 1883 . Only at the end of April 1884 was a modified treaty ratified by parliament. This left Patenôtre end of April 1884 Marseille to him signed by the King of Annam. On May 11, 1884, the Tientsin Accord was signed, which ended the armed part of the Franco-Chinese conflict .

On May 26, 1884, he arrived in Hải Phong and began to negotiate with Nguyen Van Tuong , the regent. On June 6, 1884, the royal Chinese seal that Gia Long had received from Annam as a symbol of the Chinese feudal relationship was melted down.

On June 9, 1885, Patenôtre concluded a peace treaty with Li Hung Chang in Tianjin , the Treaty of Hue , in which she recognized the French protectorates in Annam and Tonkin.

From 1888 to 1890 he was plenipotentiary ambassador to Mulai al-Hassan I in Tangier .
