Julián Fuks

Julián Fuks (born 1981 in São Paulo ) is a Brazilian writer , translator and literary critic .

Life

Julián Miguel Barbero Fuks' parents come from Argentina and fled the dictatorship in 1977 . In São Paulo he graduated in journalism from the Universidade de São Paulo (USP) and from 2004 wrote for the newspaper Folha de S. Paulo and the culture magazine Cult as a literary reporter and critic. In 2009 he received a master's degree in Latin American literature from the USP for a thesis on the Argentine writer Juan José Saer and in 2016 a doctorate from the Faculdade de Filosofia, Letras e Ciências Humanas in literary theory for the work História abstrata do romance (“Abstract history of the novel ").

His first book, Fragmentos de Alberto, Ulisses, Carolina e eu , was published in 2004 by the renowned literary publisher 7Letras and received a young talent award; his second was published in 2007 under the title Histórias de literatura e cegueira (“Stories of Literature and Blindness”), finalist of the Prêmio literary prizes Jabuti and Prêmio Portugal Telecom . It consists of three largely independent parts on the writers Jorge Luis Borges , João Cabral de Melo Neto and James Joyce and their common biographical characteristic: blindness. The content of the book can be classified as essays, short stories or even novels. Tony Monti noted in 2009 in the magazine Terra : "Fuks alternates fiction, biographical data and excerpts from the works of each author in his texts without bothering to make his sources explicit in the course of the text."

His 2011 work Procura do romance (“Search for the Novel”) also made it into the final round of three literary prizes. In 2015 the family novel A resistência was published ; this was awarded the Prêmio Jabuti in 2016 and the Prémio José Saramago in 2017 . For work on another book, the writer Mia Couto became his literary mentor from 2016 to 2017 . In 2017 he took part in the 16th edition of the Festa Literária Internacional de Paraty (FLIP). In 2018 Fuks was awarded the Anna Seghers Prize .

He first achieved international fame with the story The Dinner ("Das Essen"), which was published in the British literary magazine Granta . In 2012, Granta named him among the top 20 Brazilian young authors. The story tells the appearance of a former Argentine army officer during a private family celebration.

Since 2009 he has published literary translations from Spanish, English and Finnish. His story Augen des Elends was published in German in 2013 in the anthology Wir sind Prepar. Young prose from Brazil .
