Julianus Hospitator , also Julian the Poor or Julian the Hospitable , is a saint of the Catholic Church. He is believed to have lived in the 7th century, but its historical existence is uncertain.

Legend

The origin of St. Julian is not known, but today's Belgium is occasionally assumed to be his homeland.

His life is described in Jacobus de Voragine's Legenda aurea and contains elements of the Oedipus saga and the legends of Saints Eustachius and Christophorus . Julian is said to have unknowingly killed his parents and to have made a pilgrimage to Rome as a penance . Then Julian settled on a river either in Italy ( Potenza near Macerata ) or in French Provence ( Gard ) and ran a hostel for pilgrims there . He is also said to have cared for the sick and took travelers to the other bank of the river by ferry .

Adoration of saints

Julianus Hospitator is revered as the patron saint of travelers, pilgrims, innkeepers, ferrymen, jugglers and minstrels as well as the atoning murderers. His feast day is January 29th , but February 12th and August 31st are also mentioned as the feast days of Julianus Hospitator.

He is the patron saint of places Macerata in Italy and San Ġiljan (St Julian's) in Malta . The Belgian-Flemish national church of San Giuliano dei Fiamminghi in Rome and the church of St-Julien-le-Pauvre in Paris are dedicated to him; in Ath , Belgium , he is venerated in the church of Saint-Julien together with Julianus von Brioude .
