Julie Louise Gerberding (born August 22, 1955 in Estelline , South Dakota ) is an American university professor and expert on infectious diseases . She was from 2002 to 2009 director of the US Department of Health belonging Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Administrator of the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR).

Gerberding earned her bachelor's degrees in chemistry and biology and an MD from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland , Ohio . She then completed her internship and internship in the internal medicine department at San Francisco General Hospital , where she also served as chief physician, before doing a research fellowship in clinical pharmacology and infectious diseases at the University of California at San Francisco (UCSF). She earned a Masters of Public Health from the University of California at Berkeley in 1990 .

She continued her research at San Francisco General Hospital , which she began in 1984, until 1998. She was a faculty member at the University of California at San Francisco and led the Prevention Epicenter , a multidisciplinary research, education, and clinical service program focused on preventing infection in patients and their health care providers.

Gerberding was the assistant director of the National Center for Infectious Diseases (NCID) where she played a leading role in the CDC's response to the 2001 anthrax bioterrorism attacks . In 1998 she became director of the CDC's Healthcare Quality Enhancement Department. Here she developed patient safety initiatives and other programs to prevent infections, antibiotic resistance and medical errors in healthcare.

In 2002 she became director of the CDC and administrator of the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR). In 2009 she was followed by Tom Frieden as CDC Director.

Gerberding is the Clinical Professor of Medicine (Infectious Diseases) at Emory University and Associate Professor of Medicine (Infectious Diseases) at the University of California San Francisco.

Member of Phi Beta Kappa , Alpha Omega Alpha (Society for Medical Honor), American Society for Clinical Investigation (ASCI), American College of Physicians , Infectious Diseases Society of America , American Epidemiology Society , National Academy of Public Administration and the Institute of Medicine .
