Julie Ann Sampson Hayward (also known as Julia Sampson ; born February 2, 1934 in Los Angeles , California - † December 27, 2011 in Newport Beach , California) was an American tennis player .

Life

Sampson, born in Los Angeles in 1934, grew up in San Marino and attended high school in South Pasadena . She started playing tennis as a teenager and won the 1952 US National Junior Championships. In 1952 and 1953 she was among the top ten tennis players in the USA .

Career

Sampson was in a total of six finals at Grand Slam tournaments in 1953 , of which she was able to win two. She celebrated her first success at the Australian tennis championships (now the Australian Open ) in women's doubles with her doubles partner Maureen Connolly , against whom she lost in the individual competition in the final. With the Australian Rex Hartwig , she won the mixed competition.

This was followed by further finals at the French tennis championships (now the French Open ) and at the Wimbledon Championships as well as in mixed doubles at the US championships (now the US Open ).

Julie Sampson died on December 27, 2011 in Newport Beach at the age of 77 as a result of a fall.
