Julio César Falcioni (born July 20, 1956 , Buenos Aires ) is a former Argentine soccer goalkeeper and current coach .

Player career

Julio Falcioni played from 1976 to 1980 for the CA Vélez Sársfield in the Argentine first division. He then moved to Colombia to América de Cali , where he played for eight years. During this time, the goalkeeper won the Colombian championship five times in a row with the Los diablos rojos . The now 34-year-old Falcioni then went back to his native Argentina, where he hired at Gimnasia y Esgrima de La Plata . After a brief interlude with the Colombian representative Once Caldas , he ended his career in 1991 where he had started 15 years earlier - with Vélez Sársfield.

National team

From 1989 to 1990 Julio Falcioni completed three international matches for the Argentine national football team .

Coaching career

Six years after the end of his career, Julio Falcioni moved again to CA Vélez Sársfield , where he now worked as a coach. In 2000 he resigned from his post and trained after a short break from 2002 to 2003, the league rivals Olimpo de Bahía Blanca . Falcioni was also the head coach of CA Banfield , CA Independiente and CA Colón . In 2007 he went to his former club Gimnasia y Esgrima de La Plata , where he replaced Francisco Maturana as coach. However, he was just as unsuccessful with the team as his predecessor.

After this brief interlude at Gimnasia y Esgrima de La Plata, Julio Falcioni was unemployed for over a year before he took over as coach of CA Banfield in 2009 , a top division club with little success in the club's history. Falcioni managed to lead the team to very good performances, which resulted in winning the Argentine soccer championship in the Apertura 2009 with two points ahead of CA Newell's Old Boys . In the following years, however, Banfield could not build on the performance from the Apertura 2009, was fifth in the Clausura 2010 and failed in the Copa Libertadores 2010 already in the round of 16 at the eventual winner SC Internacional from Brazil . Banfield did not achieve very good results in Apertura 2010 either.

On December 18, 2010, Julio Falcioni left the club to succeed Claudio Borghi as coach at Boca Juniors . About a year after taking office, Julio Falconi led the Boca Juniors to their first championship since 2008. In the 2011 Apertura, two game days before the end of the season, they were first in the table after Falconi's former club CA Banfield was defeated 3-0.
