Julius Bremer (born April 17, 1828 in Wolmirstedt , † November 24, 1894 in Magdeburg ) was one of the founders of the Magdeburg workers 'movement and, in 1869, one of the founders of the Social Democratic Workers' Party, the predecessor of today's SPD.

Life

In 1863 the master cooper Bremer founded a workers' education association together with the tailor Johannes Münze . This marks the beginning of union activity in Magdeburg. In this club, which was dominated by Max Hirsch and Leberecht Uhlich , Bremer was later banned from speaking.

Bremer therefore founded the Social Reform Association together with Wilhelm Klees in 1868, which can be seen as the forerunner organization of the SPD in Magdeburg. Together with Münze, he led the Magdeburg section of the First International , of which he was the sole director after Münze's death. Bremer was one of the twelve signatories of the call for the unification congress of all social democratic workers in Eisenach in 1869 . Bremer kept close ties with Wilhelm Liebknecht and August Bebel .

In 1869, Bremer founded the Social Democratic Workers 'Association (SAV) in Magdeburg as part of the General German Workers' Association (ADAV) and took over its chairmanship. On June 22, 1869 he met with the ADAV leaders Samuel Spier , Theodor Yorck , Wilhelm Bracke and the leaders of the Saxon People's Party , Wilhelm Liebknecht and August Bebel , "in a third-class inn in Magdeburg" (Bebel) to prepare for the Congress, which ended a few weeks later in Eisenach with the establishment of the Social-Democratic Workers' Party of Germany .

Bremer opened a green goods store in Magdeburg ( Margarethenstrasse ) in order to be able to act politically independently. In 1876 he became editor of the Magdeburg newspaper "Freie Presse". He remained active during the period of the Socialist Laws from 1878 to 1890 and was temporarily imprisoned. In 1891 he was the second (after Klees) to receive a mandate for the Social Democrats in the Magdeburg city council. He was involved in the establishment of the social democratic " People's Voice ".

Honor

The cities of Wolmirstedt and Magdeburg have named a street ( Julius-Bremer-Straße ) after him.
