Wilhelm Klees

Wilhelm Klees (born March 12, 1841 in Buckau , † December 20, 1922 in Magdeburg ) was a pioneer of the labor movement and a social democratic politician.

Life

Klees first attended elementary school and then completed an apprenticeship as a lathe operator . In 1868, together with Julius Bremer , he founded the Social Reform Association , the first political organization of Magdeburg workers. The association, which at times comprised 200 members, was incorporated into the General German Workers' Association (ADAV) in 1869 .

Klees, who started his own cigar maker around 1869 , was one of the founding members of the Social Democratic Workers' Party (SDAP) founded in Eisenach in 1869 .

During the Franco-Prussian War Klees did military service in 1870/1871.

In 1877 Klees became part-time managing director of the cooperative printing company Magdeburg, which printed the header of the Free Press published twice a week in Braunschweig . The newspaper was also aimed at the working class. Klees and Bremer edited the sheet and wrote texts for it.

In 1890 Klees was elected to the Magdeburg city ​​council as the first social democratic member of his hometown Buckau . From 1893 to 1898 he was a member of the Reichstag for Magdeburg . From 1898 to 1903 he represented the constituency of Sorau-Forst there. Klees was also one of the leading functionaries of the Cigar and Tobacco Association .

Under the social democratic mayor Hermann Beims , Klees was again active in Magdeburg from 1919 to 1922 as an unpaid city councilor.

Honors

The city of Magdeburg named a street in his honor as Wilhelm-Klees-Straße .
