Julius Adolf Gatzen (born March 6, 1903 in Cologne ; † before 1946) was a German architect who worked in Frechen in the 1920s and 1930s .

Life

Julius Gatzen was born the son of a businessman . He attended the upper secondary school up to the upper secondary level . He then worked as an office worker and construction site worker in several sub-areas in the construction industry , as if there were construction companies, construction joineries, the carpentry trade, painters' shops and architectural offices. From 1922 to 1925 he attended the building trade school in Cologne, where he received a state examination certificate with distinction. During this time, he worked on the side for building contractors and architects to cover the study costs. In autumn 1925 he attended the Technical University in Hanover as a guest student . He decided to study requirement , the university, catch up, and then as a full-time student in a degree department to achieve architecture. Since his grandfather, who had supported him financially in his endeavors, suddenly died, Gatzen gave up in the second semester . The knowledge he had acquired up to then mainly in practice was sufficient for a career start, so that he offered his services as a self-employed private architect. In 1926/27, some residential buildings were built in Cologne under his planning authority.

In February 1927 he became head of the building construction department of the suburb and industrial community of Frechen near Cologne. In addition to building advice and execution, he was also responsible for the building inspectorate , which was then still known as the building police . Its buildings, and the urban development in general , attracted inspection commissions of high-ranking decision-makers from government circles and professional associations as well as well-known colleagues in the construction industry, who praised the economy and modernity. One of the showpieces was a settlement comprising three dozen houses. Under the impression of the housing shortage, it was primarily designed for poor families, has been a listed building since 1994 and is one of the most important ensembles of its kind in the Rhineland . The global economic crisis plunged the city of Frechen into financial misery, which did not allow any further construction projects. A termination, which took effect on September 30, 1931, was inevitable. The city of Leverkusen showed interest in taking over the renowned architect, but was just as hard hit by the adversities of the time and postponed the appointment for an indefinite period. Nothing is known about another career. His death is assumed before the end of the war .
