Julius Gerlach (* 1819 in Bartenstein , East Prussia , † 1873 in Tilsit ) was a German philologist, high school teacher and preacher in Tilsit . In 1848/49 he sat in the Frankfurt National Assembly. For his democratic convictions he accepted considerable setbacks.

Life

As the son of a sergeant , Gerlach attended the old town high school (Königsberg) . After graduating from high school, he studied Protestant theology and philology (German, history, Hebrew) at the Albertus University in Königsberg . He received his doctorate as Dr. phil. First he taught at the Königin-Luise-Schule (Königsberg) . On May 1, 1844, he went to the Royal Litthau Provincial School . In Tilsit he became chairman of the Democratic-Constitutional Club . In the third by-election on November 4, 1848, he was elected to the Frankfurt National Assembly. He was the only one of the 26 East Prussian MPs to support Ludwig Uhland's proposal that the “Constitution unilaterally promulgated by the Crown of Prussia would not be permanent and incompatible with the self-esteem of a free people”, “as long as it was not agreed with the representatives of the Prussian people " . On May 14, 1849, the Crown of Prussia demanded the resignation of the deputies elected in Prussia. In the Tilsener non-profit weekly paper , Gerlach explained why he did not want to follow the order and stay in parliament - "as long as it was his duty, in the firm conviction that his decision was in accordance with the will of his constituency." Gerlach resigned from parliament on May 30, 1849; Nevertheless, in 1851 the school inspectorate forbade him to take religious instruction at the grammar school. In 1854 Gerlach therefore left school. He became a deacon at the town church Tilsit and as such also took over the office of town school inspector. In 1872 he applied for the second pastor's position, which has since become vacant . Although it the parish had chosen, his application was rejected. With his sermons and especially with his charity and helpfulness, he won more and more followers. He died in office at the age of 54.
