Julius Kollmann (born February 24, 1834 in Holzheim (near Dillingen an der Donau) , † June 24, 1918 in Basel ) was a German zoologist, anthropologist and anatomist.

Life

Kollmann studied medicine at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich (LMU). In 1853 he became a member of the Corps Suevia Munich and was twice distinguished as consenior . At LMU he was a private lecturer (1862) and associate professor (1870). The University of Basel appointed him to its chair for anatomy in 1878 . He published on the development of teeth, the connective tissue (mainly of invertebrates, such as molluscs ) and the formation of blood. In other works he dealt with various European ethnic groups. Kollmann wrote textbooks on anatomy and the history of development. He described a European dwarf people from prehistoric times. In 1882 he was elected to the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina . In 1888 he was elected rector of the University of Basel. He was Dr. phil. hc from the University of Dublin and Dr. med. hc from the University of Geneva .

Kollmann's son Emil became a farmer. He trained in French-speaking Switzerland, East Prussia and South Africa. In 1902 he married Carla Widmann, the daughter of Josef Widmann and his wife Josepha geb. Brainbone. In this way, a large part of Carl Hirnbein's former property came into the hands of the Kollmann family, since both Carl Hirnbein's son Johann Baptist and his granddaughter Hedwig from Josepha's first marriage to Dr. Julius Lingg died early. Emil Kollmann's grandson Horst Kollmann maintains the family archive.
