Leopold Hiemer (born June 29, 1954 in Maierhöfen im Allgäu ) is a German film director , film producer , film distributor and author .

Life

Even during his studies in German and history, which he graduated with the state examination, Hiemer made films in Super-8 format, most of them together with Klaus Gietinger . In 1981 he founded his own production company with Klaus Gietinger, Fritz Günthner and Georg Veit, Westallgäuer Filmproduktion (WAF). With mostly tight budgets, the WAF produced some independent, demanding, often provocative films that repeatedly dealt with Leo Hiemer's home, the Allgäu . Several of these films carry the film title “valuable” or “particularly valuable”. The WAF disbanded in 1991 and in 1998 Hiemer founded "Leo Hiemer Filmproduktion".

Especially the film Daheim die Leut ' (screenplay and direction with Klaus Gietinger), about sometimes bizarre conflicts in the country, has achieved cult film status. In 1985, with 400,000 viewers, it was one of the most successful German films of the year and was nominated for the 1986 German Film Prize.

He worked with Klaus Gietinger in directing until 1991, and Marian Czura is still the cameraman today .

In March 2017 Leo Hiemer was awarded the first Bavarian Dialect Prize for the Allgäu region.

Leo Hiemer lives with his wife in Kaufbeuren . He has two grown daughters.
