background

Die Leut at Home is a production by Westallgäuer Filmproduktion GbR. The film was financially supported by the Board of Trustees of Young German Film and received funding from the Federal Ministry of the Interior through its nomination for the German Film Prize . The characters in the film were predominantly cast by amateur actors. The film was shot between July 22, 1984 and October 10, 1984 in Westallgäu.

The film title is based on a popular justification for visitors to taverns in Allgäu and is presented in the film by grandfather Allgeier in Westallgäu dialect: "Drhoim sterbet d'Leit and at Boschdwirt deannet, do isch scho Achtzg Johr koiner me gschtorba!" ("At home the people die, At the post office over there, nobody has died for eighty years! ")

The Kreuz Gasthaus in Riedhirsch, a district of Heimenkirch, served as the film set for the evening youth meeting . The inn was taken over by the host-actor of the film and continued to run.

Reviews

The film-dienst wrote that the people die at home is “a kaleidoscopic, imaginative home film of malicious charm”, which is characterized by the “critical and at the same time loving representation of federal German provincial reality”.

Der Spiegel described the film as a “piece of regional cinema shot according to all the rules of film art”. He tells "ironically broken [...] of life in the Allgäu region, of holidays in the villages, of trade and health prayer, superstition, obedience to authority and bigotry". He is based on real incidents and people. In contrast to the usually cheerful comedy nobility, it is not the people, but rather "their stories" that are exposed to laughter. Michael Althen attested in the Süddeutsche Zeitung that the film was, despite the "bitter satire and sharp-tongued criticism [...] full of sympathy for the Allgäu and its people". Althen particularly emphasized the "careful script", "which helps all characters to get their rights", "without losing sight of the story because of their multitude" and thereby true "the sympathy for their characters".

Kino.de called Daheim die Leut ' a “timeless classic of dialect film” and Cinema summarized its verdict as “bizarre: a very special Heimatfilm”.
