Julius Ludwig Friedrich Runge (born June 28, 1843 in Röbel / Müritz , † March 14, 1922 in Lindau ) was a German marine painter.

Runge studied from April 25, 1870 at the Royal Academy of the Arts in Munich with Michael Echter , Alexander Strähuber , Hermann Anschütz and Sándor Wagner , later from 1874 at the Grand Ducal Art School in Karlsruhe with Hans Gude and Gustav Schönleber .

He went on study trips to Norway , Denmark , Italy and Palestine .

He had been working in Hamburg since 1880 and became a member of the Hamburg Artists' Association .

At the beginning of the 1880s he joined the Skagen artists' colony in northern Jutland , together with the Swedish painter Wilhelm von Gegerfelt and the French Émile Barau (1851-1930).

Around 1890 he moved to Munich. He spent the last years of his life in Lindau.

He painted almost exclusively seascapes. He showed his works a. a. in the Munich Glass Palace .
