Julius Spokojny

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Julius Spokojny (born September 12, 1923 in Miechów , Poland ; died January 30, 1996 in Augsburg ) was an entrepreneur, representative of the Jewish community, and Holocaust survivor.

Life

The deeply religious Orthodox Jew Spokojny, who came from a Zionist family, was imprisoned in 16 different camps during the Holocaust and liberated in the Buchenwald concentration camp in 1945. He came to Augsburg via the DP camps in Wildflecken , Landsberg , where he founded a Zionist youth organization, and Föhrenwald in 1950. Here he settled as a textile entrepreneur and was the owner of the Jussy swimwear factory with up to 500 employees, while his mother and siblings emigrated to Israel .

Spokojny entered the Jewish community directly, where he founded the kindergarten and religious school. In the course of a difficult unification of the German and Eastern European Jewish groups into a community in which he achieved equal rights for the newcomers, he was first deputy chairman from 1950 to 1955 and later chairman of the Jewish community in Augsburg-Swabia from 1963 to 1996 . From 1960 onwards, he was also a member of the Central Welfare Office for Jews in Germany for the Jewish community . From 1973 he was a member of the Central Council of Jews in Germany and from 1974 chairman of the state committee of the Israelite religious community in Bavaria .

In addition, Spokojny was a member of the Bavarian Senate for the religious communities group from 1982 until his death in 1996 . In this role, too, he worked on his goal in life, the understanding between Jews and Christians.

The restoration of the Augsburg synagogue , which was completed in 1985 and "brought as the main exhibit in a museum that is supposed to bring our fellow human beings closer to the culture of the Jewish religion," with him as the main organizer, can be seen as his life's work.

In 2006 a street in a residential area in Augsburg was named after him. His son Artur gave the city a small tree-covered park that borders Julius Spokojny Weg.
