Juniperus erectopatens is a plant from the family of the cypress family (Cupressaceae). It occurs endemically in a district in central Chinaand is considered by some authors to be a variety of the Sade tree ( Juniperus sabina ). Other authors put it as a synonym for Juniperus chinensis var. Chinensis .

description

Juniperus erectopatens grows as an evergreen tree that can reach heights of up to 4 meters. The grayish brown bark flakes off in strips. The 0.8 to 11 millimeters thick, dense branches rise from the branches.

The species forms two different forms of leaves . Young trees, rarely also older trees, have needles that run down, cross opposite or arranged in whorls of three and close to the branches. These are 3 to 7 millimeters long, have a convex top and a pointed tip. Older trees usually have only cross-opposed, scale-shaped leaves which are 1 to 2.5 millimeters in length and are diamond-shaped to egg-shaped. In the middle of the underside of the leaf there is a conspicuous, elliptically shaped gland.

Juniperus erectopatens is dioecious, separate sexes ( dioecious ), in rare cases also monoecious ( monoecious ). The flowering period includes summer. The berry-like cones are irregularly spherical and have a diameter of 3 to 5 millimeters. They are initially light, brownish-green in color and turn purple-blue to black as they ripen and are usually frosted. Each cone bears one or two egg-shaped, somewhat flattened seeds with a length of 4 to 5 millimeters. The seeds are furrowed and have resin pits . Their tip is blunt or tapered to a point.

Distribution and location

The natural range of Juniperus erectopatens is in Sungqu County in the Chinese province of Sichuan . It is possible that the species is also found in adjacent areas.

Juniperus erectopatens thrives at altitudes of up to around 2700 meters.

Systematics

It was first described as Sabina vulgaris var. Erectopatens in 1975 by Wan Chun Cheng and Li Kuo Fu in Acta Phytotaxonomica Sinica 13 (4) , p. 86. In 1999 it was published by Robert Phillip Adams in Biochemical Systematics and Ecology 27 (7) , P. 723 described as a separate species. It is considered by some authors as a variety of the Sade tree ( Juniperus sabina ). Another synonym for Juniperus erectopatens (WC Cheng & LK Fu) RP Adams is Juniperus sabina var. Erectopatens (WC Cheng & LK Fu) YF Yu & LK Fu .

Hazard and protection

Juniperus erectopatens is not on the IUCN Red List . However, due to its small distribution area, it can be viewed as endangered.
