Juniperus morrisonicola is a plant from the family of the cypress family (Cupressaceae). It is endemic to the island of Taiwan . The species is considered by some authors as a variety of the scaled juniper ( Juniperus squamata ).

description

Juniperus morrisonicola grows as an evergreen shrub or tree that can reach heights of growth of 5 to 10 meters and diameters of up to 1 meter at chest height . The long, pencil-shaped branches are prostrate. The twigs rise from the branches.

The sheets are shaped linear with a length of 3 to 5 millimeters and a width of approximately 1 millimeter. The upper side of the leaf is whitish and the underside of the leaf is green. The leaves are close to the branches and are arranged alternately.

The berry cones are spherical to egg-shaped with a length of 6 to 8 millimeters. When ripe they are colored purple-black. Each cone carries a spherical to egg-shaped seed.

Distribution and location

The natural range of Juniperus morrisonicola is on the island of Taiwan, where the species is found in the central mountains.

Juniperus morrisonicola thrives at altitudes of 3000 meters. The species grows mainly on open, exposed slopes as a tree, otherwise more as a shrub.

Systematics

The first description as Juniperus morrisonicola was in 1908 by Hayata Bunzō in The Gardeners' Chronicle , Series 3, Volume 43, Page 194. A synonym for Juniperus morrisonicola Hayata is Sabinella morrisonicola (Hayata) Nakai . The species is also by some authors as variety Juniperus squamata var. Morrisonicola (Hayata) HLLi & H.Keng of scaly juniper ( Juniperus squamata Buch.-Ham. Ex D.Don viewed).

Juniperus morrisonicola is not listed on the IUCN Red List .
