Juniperus navicularis is a plant species that the genus juniper from the family of cypress family belongs (Cupressaceae). It only occurs in Portugal.
description
Juniperus navicularis forms narrow shrubs that can reach heights of up to 2 meters. The brown trunk bark peels off in thin layers. The branches are a bit drooping. The needle-shaped leaves are 4 to 12 millimeters long and 1 to 1.5 millimeters thick and are blunt at the tip with a spiked tip. The top has two parallel, green-blue frosted bands with pores . The leaves are usually in threes in whorls .
The cones are arranged axially. The male cones are single. The female seed cones are 7 to 10 millimeters long. They mature within two years and are spherical to pear-shaped. They change color from yellowish when immature to red or copper-red when ripe. The cones usually contain three seeds .
Occurrence
Juniperus navicularis has a limited range and, together with pines, inhabits pliocene sandy soils near the sea coast of western Portugal to southern Spain. Since these locations are rarely used by people and this type of juniper is common there, it does not seem to be endangered.
Systematics
Juniperus navicularis is within the genus Juniperus the section Juniperus assigned. DNA sequencing shows that the short-leaved juniper ( Juniperus brevifolia ) is a related species. Juniperus navicularis was originally listed as a sub taxon of Juniperus oxycedrus L .; but then defined as a separate species on the basis of leaf oil and RAPD studies . Synonyms are Juniperus oxycedrus subsp. transtagana Franco and Juniperus oxycedrus L. var. transtagana (Franco) Silba .
