Juniperus poblana is a plant from the family of the cypress family (Cupressaceae). It is native to Mexico and is considered a variety of Juniperus flaccida by some authors.

description

Juniperus poblana grows as an evergreen tree that can reach heights of growth of up to 8 meters. The trunk is mostly forked and the crown has a spherical shape. The branches go straight off the trunk and have a drooping tip. The brown bark flakes off in broad strips.

The species forms two different forms of showy leaves . The flaky leaves have a pointed tip that is curved downwards, the shape of which can vary from leaf to leaf.

Juniperus poblana is dioecious-segregated ( diocesan ) and the flowering time is in spring. The berry cones reach a diameter of 0.9 to 1.2 centimeters and are bluish-brown in color when ripe and have blue-green frosting. You can often still see the cone scales that have grown together. Each cone bears 4 to 13 seeds.

Distribution and location

The natural range of Juniperus poblana is in southern Mexico. It includes the states of Guerrero , Hidalgo , Jalisco , México , Morelos , Mexico City , Nayarit , Oaxaca , Puebla and Zacatecas .

Juniperus poblana thrives at altitudes of 1200 to 2300 meters. The species grows there mainly on dry slopes with calcareous soils. It forms pure stands but also occurs in mixed stands.

Systematics

The first description as Juniperus flaccida var. Poblana was made in 1946 by Maximino Martínez in Anales del Instituto de Biológia de la Universidad Nacional de México 31, Volume 17, page Robert Phillip Adams rose in 2006 in Phytologia , Volume 88, page 239 the variety as Juniperus poblana in species status. A synonym for Juniperus poblana (Martínez) RP Adams is Cupressus thurifera Kunth .

Juniperus poblana is not on the IUCN Red List .
