Yuri Lisyansky ( Russian Юрий Фёдорович Лисянский ., Scientific transliteration Jurij Fedorovic Lisjanskij ; born August 2, jul. / 13 August  1773 greg. In Nizhyn ; † February 22 jul. / 6. March  1837 greg. In Saint Petersburg ) was a Russian naval officer and explorer of Ukrainian descent.

Life

Lisjanski was born in Nizhyn ( Ukraine ) as the son of an Orthodox priest and comes from an old family of the Zaporozhian Cossacks . Lisjanski served in the Russian fleet after finishing naval school in 1786 and took part in the Russo-Swedish War from 1788 to 1790 . During his internship in the British fleet from 1793 to 1799, he took part in their combat operations in North America , South Africa and India . After his return home, in 1803 he translated the English-language book on sailing ship tactics by John Clerk Maxwell (“An essay on naval tactics ...”) into Russian. As commander of the Neva under Krusenstern , he took part in the first Russian circumnavigation of the world from 1803 to 1806. On this trip, Lissjanski documented numerous nautical , marine and ethnographic observations. After the world tour he served in the Baltic Fleet and resigned from service in 1809 in the rank of Captain I.

The Hawaiian island Lisianski he discovered was named after Lissjanski .
